A Life with More Than One Wife “by Qoshetishyah”

Polygyny (from neo-Greek: Poly meaning “many” and gyny meaning “woman or wife), is a form of marriage in which a man has two or more wives simultaneously. In Western countries, other wives are only recognized as additional partners and have no legal claims to the husband or his proprietorship. Originating from ancient African/Eastern culture, this lifestyle was widely accepted and is still practiced today, however; Polygyny as part of the Western civilization, was outlawed and termed as bigamy and impractical. According to Western civilization, its laws concerning marriage, were designed to protect the spouse in the event of a divorce or death.  However; sociologists believe that we will soon observe a resurgence in polygamous practices without the ability to avoid it.

“Polygamy may be abhorrent to most Americans, but in the global community it is common, normal and accepted. ‘Although the percentage of men in the world who have more than one wife is relatively small, as many as a third of the world’s population belongs to a community that allows it,’ says Israeli anthropologist Joseph Ginat.  ‘There are many plural marriages in Africa, the Middle East and in Asia,’ said Ginat, professor of social and culture anthropology at the University of Haifa…..” (Salt Lake Tribune, September 20, 1998).

The Ancient Hebrews portrayed in the Tankh/Torah or The Old Testament clearly lived the life of polygyny that was obviously accepted as well as encouraged by the Creator.  In no way was it ever lableled as adultery, sinful or perverse.  In fact, one would find that only man-made religions teach monogamy.  Isaiah, one of the prophets of the Hebrew Bible clearly states that in the last days there will be 7 women for every one man.

Isaiah 7:4  And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach.

In case one hasn’t noticed, we are living this very prophecy today.

All in all, isn’t it ironic how the United Snakes of America,  whose foundation is based upon Christianity,  would prefer to recognize same-sex marriages in place of  a marriage that is righteously accepted by the Creator.  Either there is something very wrong with Christianity or the laws of this county…”or possibly both”.

Something to think about!

Once the concept of monogamy can be broken free from, it is at that moment that the benefits of polygyny can be viewed for what they truly entail. The basis of Polygyny is structured around family growth and development and should be practiced in virtue in order to appreciate its true intent.  One of the benefits is to  provide a balance and equal distribution of social, material, security and economic benefits to both sexes.  Although polygyny has both negative and positive attributes….we all have witnessed as far as eyes can see… that monogamy has the very  same attributes.  Let us take a moment to  acknowledge some of the advantages of a polygynous marriage:

  • Creates Family
  • Father figure of the fatherless
  • Creates “Sisterhood”
  • Enables the mother to spend more time with the children or to do more things for herself.
  • Helps with housework, cleaning, cooking, laundry
  • Help with childcare
  • Preserves marriages and makes sure that divorce, affairs, and unhappiness do not occur
  • More people equals more prosperity, the enlargement and greater defense for the community

Given that polygyny is practiced fairly, there are many benefits to be had from polygyny.  The idea is alien to a lot of people, but if they can get past the cultural, religious, and social barriers that prevent them from embracing polygyny, there would be far less divorces, unhappy marriages, and affairs.

"Sister Wives TLC Sunday Nights at 10PM, EST"

Sister Wives is a new reality series about a Polygynous man who is  married to four women, with 16 children between them all, ranging from ages 4 to 15, with another on the way.  It is one of the few prevailing mind sets of today that is preparing the away for the legal, moral and social toleration and even the approval of Polygyny.

I found this show to be quite enlightening, as it is a lifestyle that is divinely connected to my culture. Although I have always considered this lifestyle and have had opportunities to experience it, my westernized composition has prevented me from partaking of its regime. As a part of my quest for veracity in justice, it is my plea that someday, my mind may be opened to the likelihood of embracing such a standard way of living.  Until then, I pray that after reading this article that many of you are encouraged to educate yourself further on the topic at hand before judging.
